Southcombe Barn is pleased to announce the opening 'A Premonition of this Place', a joint exhibition by Milly Brown and Becky Dodman Wainwright. The show which features painting, drawing, textiles and collage follows a week-long artists residency this August. Inspired by the cultivated and wild spaces in and around the barn the artists explored place, spirit, and divination for the starting points for the exhibited work.

The residency allowed the artists to explore the unique landscapes and examine how past habitations and interventions might help us in divining the future of our physical and metaphysical landscapes and included an outreach workshop with Shallowford Farm.

Southcombe Barn Art Gallery

Southcombe Barn Art Gallery is dedicated to supporting women artists and bringing current creative discussion to the countryside, representing voices that have been historically excluded from mainstream discourse. The Gallery is set within the grounds of Southcombe Barn, a new arts, nature and wellbeing retreat space located in Widecombe-in-the-Moor, Dartmoor. Set in 16 acres of wildflower meadow, pasture and ancient woodland and backing onto the open moor, we offer beautiful guest accommodation, events and workshops.

Milly Brown

Milly Brown is a visual artist and educator. Often working with paper, collage and publishing formats, her practice explores ideas of place, objectivity, value and editing. She has exhibited her work at London Design Week and at various galleries in the South West including ‘N-E-W Ideas’ in Devon, and she is also a founding partner of @field.system

Becky Dodman Wainwright

Becky Dodman Wainwright is a textile artist and designer whose work explores traditional crafts and the amorphic abstraction of self, to produce textile collections and artworks. She is a Crafts Council and Make SW member and has exhibited in solo and group gallery shows. In 2021 she showed at the Making It - Jubilee Exhibition at Bovey Tracey, alongside a solo show at Ocean Studios, Plymouth, where she presented 50 tufted and woven artworks.
